About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a Bidjar, the dense, heavy-handed weave of the Kurdish regions of western Iran, measuring 192 x 151 cm (6'4" x 4'11"). The type carries the old nickname of the Iron Rugs of Persia, earned by a structure so tightly packed that a finished piece can only be rolled, never folded, and still holds its shape decades on.
What you see
The first impression is a deep brick red ground, broken by a navy medallion set at its centre. The same navy reappears in the four corner spandrels, drawn to match the medallion so closely that the field reads as balanced and considered rather than simply patterned. Between them the red ground carries a fine diamond lattice, quiet enough not to compete with the medallion above it. A wide ivory border runs around the whole, dense with floral scrollwork in soft pink, salmon, sage and dusty blue, closed by a thin red guard that holds the composition together.
How it was made
That kind of balance is unusual in a rug knotted from memory rather than from a drawn plan, and here it comes from an exceptional density of knot: between 441,000 and 500,000 per square metre, among the tightest counts in the Persian tradition. Only at that density can a lattice this fine, and a medallion edge this crisp, stay true across a field worked by eye rather than by cartoon. Wool spun with silk gives the surface a light sheen and a sharper line than wool alone would hold, while the cotton warp keeps the 15mm pile settled and even. That kind of knotting is months of steady work, and it shows.
At home
At this size the rug suits a seating corner in a living room, or a quiet bedroom, more than a full dining table. The red holds its own against dark wood and warms a pale floor without overwhelming it, and the ivory border keeps the whole piece from reading as heavy. Underfoot it is dense and firm, an iron rug in the true sense, built for a room that gets lived in rather than kept for best. As the light shifts across it through the day, the silk in the pile catches along the edge of the medallion, a small, changing brightness against the steadiness of the red.
