About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a Bijar, also written Bidjar, from the Kurdish weaving regions of western Iran, measuring 300 x 209 cm (9'10" x 6'10"). The type is known across the trade as one of the Iron Rugs of Persia, prized for a density of weave that holds its shape and pattern for decades. Here that famous structure carries wool combined with silk, giving the iron a certain shine.
What you see
A deep brick red fills the field, dense with a fine all-over Mahi lattice. Rising from its centre is a scalloped medallion in navy and cream, echoed at each corner by matching partial spandrels, so the whole design reads as one evenly drawn plan. A wide cream border of floral scrollwork, framed by narrow navy guard stripes, closes the field and holds close to a fifth of the rug's width, its pale ground giving the deep red somewhere to rest.
How it was made
The density here runs to 441,000-500,000 knots per square metre, near the top of the Bijar range — work at this rate takes months at the loom. The pile mixes wool with silk over a cotton warp; silk spins finer than wool, so the knot pulls tighter, giving the medallion its clean, unblurred edge. At 15mm the pile sits low and firm, pressed down in the Bijar manner, so the rug cannot be folded, only rolled.
At home
This is a rug for a dining table or a generous seating group, in a living or dining room. The red holds its own against dark wood and warms a pale floor without help from anything else nearby. Underfoot it is dense, firm and substantial, built for a room that gets used rather than kept for best. In low afternoon light, the silk in the pile lifts the navy and cream medallion just enough to notice.
