Where it comes from
This is a Bijar, also written Bidjar, from the Kurdish region of western Iran, long known as one of the Iron Rugs of Persia for a structure pressed so dense it can only be rolled, never folded. At 194 x 153 cm (6'4" x 5'0"), this piece carries that legendary strength, and a pattern drawn with unusual precision for a type famous first for toughness.
What you see
The first impression is a deep, brick-red field, patterned all over with a fine diamond lattice in the Mahi, or fish, design. At the centre sits a bold navy medallion, echoed in matching spandrels at each corner, both filled with pink, cream and teal palmettes that stand out against the finer red ground. A wide ivory border closes the composition, carrying its own scrollwork of red and navy florals across roughly a fifth of the rug's width.
How it was made
That density and fine drawing trace to the knot count: 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, among the highest in Persian weaving, tied in wool with a thread of silk, which spins finer and lets the weaver set a tighter knot exactly where the pattern needs it — in the medallion's palmettes and the border's scrollwork, both catching a slight sheen against the matte red field. At 15 mm the pile stays low and firm, pressed hard against a cotton warp, which is what gives a Bijar its weight and its name.

At this size the rug suits a bedroom or a quiet seating corner of a living room. Its brick red warms a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood, while the ivory border keeps the composition light rather than heavy.
