About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

This is a Bidjar, also written Bijar, from the Kurdish regions of western Iran, measuring 225 x 172 cm (7'4" x 5'8"). Bijar rugs have long been called the Iron Rugs of Persia, known for a density of knotting unmatched elsewhere in the Persian tradition and for a structure pressed so firm that a finished piece can only be rolled, never folded.

What you see

A deep brick red fills the field edge to edge, carrying a close, all-over lattice of diamonds drawn in navy — the Mahi, or Herati, repeat, run here without a medallion to interrupt it. Red and navy meet with unusual sharpness, staying distinct rather than softening into each other the way this pattern often does. A wide navy border, dense with cream and dusty rose blossoms, closes the field, held by narrow ivory guard stripes and a plain red band that frames the whole rug cleanly.

How it was made

That sharpness is not accidental. The pile is wool over a cotton warp, but carries a thread of silk, which spins finer than wool and lets the weaver set each colour boundary with more precision than wool alone allows — hence the clean edge between red ground and navy lattice. At 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, this sits near the top of what Bijar weaving attempts, packed into a low 15mm pile so tightly pressed that the rug holds its pattern, and its shape, through decades of use.

At home

At this size, the rug suits a dining room under the table or a seating group in a living room. Its brick red holds its own against dark wood and warms a pale floor without overwhelming it. Underfoot it is dense, firm and substantial rather than soft, a rug made to be walked on rather than protected, and well suited to a room that sees daily life. As light moves across it through the day, the navy lattice catches a faint sheen and seems to sharpen into focus.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 225 × 172 cm (3.87 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 3.87 m² that is roughly 1.7 to 1.9 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
