About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

This is a Bidjar runner from the Kurdish regions of western Iran, 397 x 81 cm (13'0" x 2'8"). Bidjars are known as the Iron Rugs of Persia, also written Bijar, knotted from memory and valued for the densest weave in the Persian tradition. Here that density runs the length of a hallway rather than the width of a room.

What you see

The field runs a deep brick red, filled edge to edge with fine Mahi lattice that gives it a restless texture. Down the centre marches a chain of five medallions, hexagonal rather than the more usual diamond, each a navy outline around a cream centre filled with Herati scrollwork. Rather than a single medallion to rest on, the eye follows a procession, one after another. A narrow ivory-cream border closes the field, its small red and navy palmettes picking up both colours without competing.

How it was made

Bidjar carries the densest knotting in the Persian tradition, running here to 501,000-640,000 knots per square metre, knotted by hand onto a cotton warp with hand-spun wool clipped to 15 millimetres. That density lets the hexagons and their Herati fill come through cleanly, curved rather than stepped. It is also why a Bidjar is never folded, only rolled - the weave is pressed too tight to bend. That wool keeps a faint, uneven sheen across the red rather than a flat shine.

At home

A runner this length belongs in a hallway or on a landing, walked along rather than sat beside, and dense Bidjar weave is built for exactly that traffic - firm and substantial underfoot, not soft. The brick red holds its own where a hallway gets little daylight, glowing rather than fading into the walls. Walking its length, the five medallions pass one after another, the sheen in the wool catching differently with each step.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 397 × 81 cm (3.22 m²) this is a runner. It belongs in a hallway, an entrance, on a landing or lengthways beside a bed. It is too narrow for the middle of a room.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 501,000 to 640,000 knots per square metre; across 3.22 m² that is roughly 1.6 to 2.1 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
