About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a Bidjar, also written Bijar, from the Kurdish weaving districts of western Iran, 202 x 153 cm (6'7" x 5'0"). The type is known through the Persian tradition as the densest of all Persian weaves, tied down so tightly that a Bidjar is rolled rather than folded, and for holding its shape and colour through decades of use.
What you see
The first impression is a deep blue-black field, so dark it reads almost as ink. Across it runs a close, all-over Mahi lattice, diamonds interlocking with small rosettes and serrated leaves in brick red, cream and soft green, with no medallion anywhere to break the rhythm. The eye moves through the repeat rather than settling on a centre, which gives the field a quality closer to a woven textile than a rug built around a single motif. A wide brick-red border, carrying a cream floral vine, closes the field on all sides, held in turn by narrower ivory and navy guard stripes that frame the whole piece with unusual precision for a pattern this dense.
How it was made
The knot count here runs to 441,000-500,000 per square metre, close to the ceiling of what the Persian tradition attempts, and it is this density that lets a lattice this fine repeat without blurring anywhere along its length. The pile is wool worked with silk, so most of the surface has the weight and matte depth of wool, while threads of silk catch the light along the cream vine and rosette centres and give the whole rug the light sheen visible across it. Underneath, a cotton warp holds the structure so tightly packed that, true to the type, this rug is never folded, only rolled.

At 202 x 153 cm, this is a piece for a bedroom, a reading corner, or a smaller seating group rather than a full dining table, and it holds its own in any of them. The blue-black field grounds a pale floor and reads with quiet authority against dark furniture, while the red and cream border keeps the eye moving without ever competing for attention.
