About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

This is a Bijar, also written Bidjar, from the Kurdish weaving districts of western Iran, 298 x 208 cm (9'9" x 6'10"). The type is known across the trade as the Iron Rugs of Persia, for a structure knotted so densely and pressed so firm that it can only be rolled, never folded, and is expected to outlast the room around it.

What you see

The field is a deep, even brick red, filled corner to corner with a small-scale Mahi diamond lattice and no medallion to interrupt it. Within each diamond, fine scrollwork turns in red, navy and rust, with quiet touches of teal-green and black. A wide ivory border, close to a fifth of the rug's width, gathers the same red and navy floral scroll into a calmer, paler band, where the eye rests after the field's intensity. The lattice keeps its scale and rhythm with unusual evenness edge to edge.

How it was made

This density is a measured fact: between 441,000 and 500,000 knots per square metre, the highest range in the Persian tradition, each one hand-knotted into a cotton foundation. The pile is wool worked with silk, and silk spins far finer than wool, which lets the knotting close this tight without the diamonds above blurring at their edges. At 15 millimetres the pile sits low and firm, pressed flat under its own weight - the source of a Bijar's famous solid, almost metallic hand.

At home

This is a dining room piece, sized to gather a table and chairs, or a living room piece for a wider seating group. The red holds its own against dark wood and warms a pale floor, while the ivory border keeps it light rather than heavy. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for daily use rather than kept for best. In low afternoon light the silk lifts the red, and the lattice seems to breathe as you cross it.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 298 × 208 cm (6.20 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 6.20 m² that is roughly 2.7 to 3.1 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
