About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

This is a Bidjar, also written Bijar, from the Kurdish region of western Iran, measuring 202 x 149 cm (6'8" x 4'11"). The type is known as the Iron Rugs of Persia, prized for a structure pressed so dense and firm that a piece can never be folded, only rolled, and for a durability that has kept collectors returning to Bidjar for generations.

What you see

The first impression is a bold ivory medallion floating on a field so densely worked it reads almost as woven fabric before any single motif stands out. Look closer and the field itself carries a fine diamond lattice in red and navy, over which the lobed medallion sits with its own small dark pendant at the centre. Cream floral spandrels fill the corners, echoed in the vine running around a wide black outer border, closed in by a red guard stripe.

How it was made

Bidjar weavers of this kind knot from memory rather than from a drawn plan, which is why the lattice shifts subtly cell to cell instead of repeating with mechanical exactness. The wool pile, lifted with silk and set at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, among the highest counts anywhere in the Persian tradition, is what keeps the medallion's edge so clean and gives the ivory its faint, even sheen. Clipped to fifteen millimetres and packed onto a cotton foundation, the pile is pressed so tightly that the rug holds its shape rather than drapes, which is the whole reason it can only ever be rolled.

At home

At just over two metres by one and a half, this suits a bedroom floor or a smaller seating corner, somewhere it will be seen daily rather than crossed in passing. The rust red and navy hold their depth against dark wood and stand up just as well over pale boards, while the ivory medallion keeps the eye at the centre of the room. Underfoot it feels dense and substantial, built for daily use rather than for standing aside, and the silk within the wool answers the light differently as the day moves across it.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 202 × 149 cm (3.01 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 3.01 m² that is roughly 1.3 to 1.5 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
