About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a Bijar, also written Bidjar, knotted by Kurdish weavers in western Iran, known as one of the Iron Rugs of Persia for a density that holds its shape for decades. It measures 318 x 206 cm (10'5" x 6'9"). Rather than the medallion a Bijar usually carries, this piece runs in horizontal bands, closer to a woven textile than a classical carpet.
What you see
The first impression is rhythm: broad bands of brick red and deep navy run the length of the field, each filled with small floral scrolls and palmettes in ivory, teal and dusty rose. There is no medallion; the pattern spreads evenly from edge to edge, so the stripes register before the flowers within them do. A wide border in near-black navy closes the field, carrying its own red, cream and blue blossoms and taking up roughly a fifth of the rug.
How it was made
That rhythm holds because of the knotting: between 441,000 and 500,000 knots per square metre, among the densest counts in the Persian tradition and the source of the old nickname. At that density a band closes cleanly from corner to corner, keeping the stripes running true across the width. The pile is wool with silk over a cotton foundation; silk spins finer, so the small palmettes keep their outline instead of blurring, and a pile of 15 millimetres leaves nothing soft to round the edges off.
At home
At 318 x 206 cm this rug sits well under a dining table or in front of a sofa group in a living room. Brick red and navy hold their own against dark wood and warm a paler floor. Underfoot it is dense, firm and substantial, built for daily use rather than standing aside. As light crosses it through the day, the red and navy bands shift in tone.
