About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a Bidjar, sometimes written Bijar, from the Kurdish weaving regions of western Iran, measuring 242 x 174 cm (7'11" x 5'9"). The type has earned itself a nickname among collectors, "the iron rugs of Persia," for a weave so dense and so tightly pressed that a Bidjar cannot be folded, only rolled. It is that density, more than anything drawn on its surface, that this piece is known for.
What you see
The first impression is a field of deep wine red, covered edge to edge in a fine, repeating diamond lattice, the classic Mahi pattern, with no medallion to interrupt it. Within the lattice, navy diamonds sit against the red ground, small touches of rose, teal-grey and rust catching the eye at intervals. A wide ivory border, dense with floral vine, frames the field and takes up close to a fifth of the rug's width, edged by a slim navy-black guard stripe. The same deep red returns in small amounts through the cream border, a quiet thread linking the two halves of the design, and the red-on-red lattice ends up reading calmer than the busier border around it.
How it was made
That calm is a product of the knotting, not an accident of drawing. This is a hand-knotted piece on a cotton warp, its pile wool blended with silk, set at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, a density among the tightest in the Persian tradition. Silk takes a finer thread than wool alone, which is what allows a lattice this fine to hold its edges without blurring at this knot count. The pile sits low at 15mm and close to the foundation, with a light sheen where the silk catches, and together they give the surface its crisp, flat-looking definition and its considerable weight in the hand.
At home
At 242 by 174 centimetres this rug is built for a seating group in a living room, or a bedroom floor where its density will do good work. The wine red will hold its own against dark wood or leather and warm a paler floor without effort, while the ivory border keeps the whole piece from reading too heavy in a bright room. Underfoot it is dense, firm and substantial, a rug that takes daily traffic rather than asking to be protected from it. Watch it through changing light and it is the small red accents in the cream border you keep returning to.
