About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

This is a Bidjar, also written Bijar, one of the classic medallion carpets of Kurdish western Iran, measuring 245 x 204 cm (8'0" x 6'8"). Weavers there produced what the trade still calls the iron rugs of Persia: pieces so densely knotted that they are rolled rather than folded, and are prized above all for how long they last underfoot.

What you see

The field is a deep brick red, covered edge to edge in a fine black lattice of small repeating diamonds, the Mahi pattern at its most disciplined. At the centre sits a round medallion in navy and cream, and the corner spandrels answer it in the same colours and the same floral drawing, so the whole field reads as balanced and mirrored rather than busy. A wide ivory-cream border, filled with red and navy floral scrollwork, frames it all, closed by a plain red band.

How it was made

Bidjar is famously the densest knotting in the Persian tradition, and this piece sits at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, cotton warp beneath a hand-knotted pile of wool with silk. Silk spins finer than wool, so mixed into the pile it lets the weaver sharpen the lattice and keep the medallion's curves clean rather than stepped. At that density the rug settles into the compact, immovable structure that gives Bidjar its name - rolled rather than folded, months of work in every square metre.

At home

A rug this firm underfoot suits a living room, anchoring a seating group or lying beneath a low table for daily use. The brick red holds its own against dark wood and warms a pale floor, while the ivory border keeps the room open. Wool and silk carry a slight sheen, so through the day the lattice and the medallion's pastel edges catch the light.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 245 × 204 cm (5.00 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 5.00 m² that is roughly 2.2 to 2.5 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
