About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a hand-knotted Bidjar, also written Bijar, from the Kurdish weaving regions of western Iran, measuring 354 x 253 cm (11'7" x 8'4"). The type is nicknamed the Iron Rug of Persia, prized for a density and firmness that few other Persian weaves attempt, and for combining strong geometry with the softer curves of classical Persian floral drawing.
What you see
At a distance the field reads almost as a solid, deep brick red, so fine and even is the all-over pattern. Look closer and it resolves into a dense Mahi, or Herati, repeat, drawn without a medallion and remarkably regular across the whole field. A wide navy border encloses it, filled with red and cream floral scrollwork touched with steel blue and dusty rose, and finished with narrow cream guard stripes that hold the red field and the dark border apart.
How it was made
Bijar rugs carry the densest knotting in the Persian tradition, and this piece sits at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, dense enough to draw the small motifs of the Mahi repeat with this much precision and calm. The pile mixes wool with silk, and silk takes a finer, sharper edge than wool alone, which is why the pattern reads so even rather than blurred. Pressed this tightly against a cotton warp, the rug cannot be folded, only rolled, and it carries weight underfoot.
