About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

This is a Bijar, also spelled Bidjar, a rug from the Kurdish region of western Iran, 293 x 201 cm (9'7" x 6'7"). Bijar weavings are called the Iron Rugs of Persia, known across the trade for a structure so dense and tightly pressed that it is never folded, only rolled, and for a durability few other traditions can match.

What you see

The field is a deep brick red, deepening toward wine at the edges, filled with a fine diamond lattice in red and navy. This is the Mahi pattern, drawn so closely and evenly that from across a room it reads like a printed textile rather than a hand-knotted one. There is no central medallion; the diamonds simply repeat until they meet a wide ivory border, where red and cream palmettes alternate along a floral vine, its pale ground holding the dark field firmly in place.

How it was made

That density comes from the knot count, between 321,000 and 380,000 per square metre, among the highest in Persian weaving, tied by hand in handspun wool on a cotton foundation. Each diamond in the lattice is built from many small knots rather than a few large ones, so the pattern holds its edges cleanly and the red ground gathers into something closer to black-red than pure red. Pressed short and firm at 15 millimetres, the pile carries real weight and wears for decades underfoot.

At home

This rug suits a dining room, sitting well under a table, or a living room in front of a sofa. The deep red warms a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood or leather. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for daily use rather than display. In low light the navy lines catch first, and the lattice slowly separates into its diamonds.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 293 × 201 cm (5.89 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 5.89 m² that is roughly 1.9 to 2.2 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
