About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a Bidjar — also written Bijar or Bidjar — a runner from the Kurdish weaving regions of western Iran, 245 x 82 cm (8'0" x 2'8"). Bidjar rugs are known across the trade as the Iron Rugs of Persia, for a structure pressed so tight and firm that it is rolled rather than folded, and holds its form through decades of hard use.
What you see
The first impression is a long red field, filled edge to edge with a fine diamond lattice, no medallion breaking its rhythm. Small rosettes and serrated leaf forms repeat in the Mahi manner, in navy, dusty rose, sage green and dark brown, each diamond set close against the next. A wide navy border carries a running floral vine, held at the edge by a narrow cream guard stripe scattered with small blossoms, and against the brick red it reads with real clarity.
How it was made
Bidjar construction is the densest in the Persian tradition, and here it reaches 441,000–500,000 knots per square metre, hand-knotted in wool with a thread of silk over a cotton warp. Silk spins finer than wool, so the knot sits tighter without blurring, which is why the small rosettes keep such crisp edges at this scale. The cotton warp holds the weave flat and firm rather than springy, and at 15 mm the pile stays low and dense. Knotted from memory rather than from a drawn plan, the pattern still holds a steady rhythm down the full length, unusual for work built without a cartoon.
At home
A runner this size is made for a hallway or a landing, running along the floor where a wider rug would not fit. The brick red brings warmth into a passage that often sees little daylight, while the navy border holds its edge cleanly against dark skirting or floorboards. Densely knotted and only 15 mm deep, it lies flat and firm underfoot, built to be walked on rather than kept for best. Morning light crossing the lattice catches the wool's soft sheen, so the small rosettes shift gently as you pass.
