About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

A Bidjar, also written Bijar, from the Kurdish region of western Iran, 236 x 170 cm (7'9" x 5'7"). Bidjar carries the nickname the Iron Rugs of Persia, earned by a density of weave unmatched elsewhere in the Persian tradition — so compact a Bidjar is never folded, only rolled. This piece carries that strength into an unusually calm, evenly drawn field.

What you see

The field is a deep brick-to-wine red, filled edge to edge with a dense Mahi lattice, the navy and black diamond trellis that gives the pattern its repeat. There is no medallion; the diamonds simply continue, each rosette touched with teal-green and dusty rose. The repeat is so even it could pass for a printed textile rather than a hand-drawn rug. A wide cream border closes the field, carrying red and navy palmettes on a trailing vine, edged by a slim black guard.

How it was made

That evenness is earned, not accidental. Wool carrying a thread of silk was hand-knotted at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre. Silk spins finer than wool, so more knots fit into the same square without losing definition — which is what keeps every diamond and palmette drawn to the same crisp edge. At 15 millimetres the pile is clipped low and pressed down hard, giving the rug the dense, almost rigid hand behind that nickname.

At home

This size suits a seating area or a bedroom, not a dining table. Laid in front of a sofa, the wine-red field holds its own against dark wood and warms a pale floor. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for a room that gets used, not admired from the doorway. In low light the silk in the pile catches faintly along the lattice lines, and the diamonds seem to shift very slightly as you cross the room.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 236 × 170 cm (4.01 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 4.01 m² that is roughly 1.8 to 2.0 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
