About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a Bidjar, also written Bijar, a rug type knotted by Kurdish weavers in western Iran and known throughout the trade as the Iron Rug of Persia for a knot density no other Persian weaving matches. It measures 263 x 173 cm (8'8" x 5'8"), and carries a Mahi lattice with a medallion outlined with unusual sharpness at its centre.
What you see
The field is a deep, near-black navy, filled with the fine diamond trellis of a Mahi lattice, each diamond holding a small flower in muted teal-green and dusty pink. Rising from that dark ground, a lobed medallion in brick red sits with two matching pendants, outlined crisply in ivory so it holds apart from the lattice rather than melting into it. A broad red floral border, held between narrow ivory guard stripes, repeats that same red and closes the design around it.
How it was made
Bijar weavers pack the knots unusually close, here between 441,000 and 500,000 to the square metre, and press each row down hard against the last, which gives the finished rug its legendary weight and rigidity — a Bijar is rolled rather than folded, since the weave is too compact to bend. The pile is wool strengthened with silk, a finer fibre that lets the knot sit tighter still, and that tightness is what keeps the medallion's ivory outline so clean against the dark field.

The near-black ground steadies a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood, while the red medallion keeps drawing the eye to the centre.
