Where it comes from
A Bijar rug from the Kurdish region of western Iran, 240 x 138 cm (7'10" x 4'6"), the weaving long known as one of the iron rugs of Persia for a structure so dense it can only be rolled, never folded. What that toughness usually produces is a rug that reads as heavy and grounded. This one carries that same weight but glows.
What you see
A deep brick red fills the field, and against it an ivory medallion opens like a sunburst, its scalloped edge and radiating rosette centre drawn cleanly enough to hold the eye before anything else registers. Dense floral vine and palmette scrollwork fill the red ground around it, with navy spandrels repeating the medallion's colour into the corners. A wide navy border, itself carrying the same floral scrollwork, frames the whole field, narrower guard stripes settling the transition between border and ground.
How it was made
The pile is handspun wool, knotted by hand onto a cotton warp, and it is the knot count behind that construction which lets the ivory outline stay so crisp rather than blurring into the red — Bijar weaving is knotted more densely than any other Persian tradition, and a fine, tightly packed knot is what allows a scalloped edge to survive as drawing rather than dissolving into a shape. The pile itself sits low and even, catching a light sheen across the lighter motifs. Being a recent piece, under twenty years old, the contrast between that bright ivory and the ground red is still unworn and clean, exactly as it left the loom.

At 240 x 138, this is a rug for a bedroom floor or a quieter seating corner, somewhere it is seen up close rather than crossed constantly. The red holds its depth against dark wood and warms a pale floor equally well, while the ivory medallion keeps its own light even in a room without much daylight. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for years of ordinary use rather than careful protection. Morning light across it tends to catch the medallion first, and that is the part of the room you keep returning to.
