About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a Bidjar, also written Bijar, from the Kurdish weaving regions of western Iran, measuring 203 x 196 cm (6'8" x 6'5") — close to square, a format this type rarely takes. Bidjars are known across the trade as the Iron Rugs of Persia, prized for a density of knotting that no other Persian weaving matches and for a structure so firm the rugs can only be rolled, never folded.
What you see
The first impression is a deep navy field glowing around a rust-red stepped diamond medallion. Look again and the medallion resolves into three nested layers — an outer band of navy, a ring of rust-red, a cream centre — set against a fine Mahi lattice of small repeating fish-form motifs covering the ground. Ivory spandrels fill the corners, calm against the darker field, and a wide navy border carries the same rust-red and cream floral scrollwork outward, held in check by narrow ivory guard stripes on either side.
How it was made
Bidjars owe their famous density to a weave pressed hard at the loom, and this piece sits at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, dense enough to draw the medallion's three layers with clean, unbroken edges rather than the blur a looser knot would leave. The pile is wool finished with silk, which spins finer than wool alone and gives the surface the light sheen visible across the medallion and border. Kept to 15 millimetres on a cotton warp, the pile stays short and firm, so the whole rug reads dense and slightly ribbed underfoot rather than soft.
At home
A piece this size and this close to square sits well in a living room, centred under a low table where a seating group gathers, or at the foot of a bed. The navy holds its own against dark wood furniture, while the rust-red medallion warms a room with paler flooring. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for daily use rather than display, and the silk in the pile keeps catching a soft gleam as the light in the room moves through the day.
