Where it comes from
This is a Bijar, also written Bidjar, knotted by Kurdish weavers in western Iran, measuring 296 x 205 cm (9'8" x 6'9"). The type is known as the iron rugs of Persia, prized for a density that lets it outlast almost any other hand-knotted rug, knotted from memory rather than from a drawn plan — a method that usually shows in an assertive, uneven hand.
What you see
The field is a deep brick red veering toward garnet, and from across the room it settles into fine texture rather than pattern. Closer in, it resolves into a dense, all-over Mahi lattice of small diamonds, rosettes and serrated leaves, repeated edge to edge with no medallion to interrupt it. Olive green, slate blue and coral pink surface quietly within the red. A wide ivory border of floral scrollwork, held between dark navy guard stripes, closes around it and carries the contrast it does not need.
How it was made
What stands out is how evenly this lattice has been drawn. Memory-knotted patterns typically drift as the weaver's eye moves across the loom; here the diamonds run true from selvedge to selvedge, closer to a drawn cartoon than to a nomadic hand. The pile is hand-spun wool, giving a soft, matte surface, on a cotton warp that holds the tight Bijar knot flat. That density explains the rest of the reputation: the weave is packed so tightly it can only be rolled, never folded.

This rug suits a dining table or a living room seating group. The brick red holds its own against dark wood and warms a pale floor, doing it quietly rather than loudly. Underfoot the pile is dense and firm, built for daily use rather than a corner kept for show. Through the day the red shifts between brick and garnet as the light moves, while the cream border stays crisp throughout.
