About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

This is a hand-knotted Bidjar runner, also written Bijar, 214 x 73 cm (7'0" x 2'5"), knotted in the Kurdish regions of western Iran. Bijar rugs are called the iron rugs of Persia, prized above all for a density of knotting that no other Persian weaving matches, and for a structure so compact that a piece like this can only be rolled, never folded.

What you see

Deep brick red runs the length of the field, calm rather than fiery. Down its centre march three floral medallions, cream at heart, drawn identically and spaced with exact regularity, giving the runner an almost mirrored rhythm end to end. They sit on a dense Mahi ground, the classic lattice of rosettes pairing sharp geometry with soft Persian floral drawing. A wide midnight-navy border, worked with the same flowers in dusty rose, sage and camel, closes the field, edged by narrow cream guard stripe.

How it was made

Bijar weavers press the weft hard as they work, and knot the pile in wool mixed with silk, a finer fibre that lets each line sit crisp rather than blur. That is why three medallions of this size come out identically drawn, evenly spaced, rather than drifting as in a coarser wool. At 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, this sits among the densest knotting in the Persian tradition, packed so tight that the rug can only be rolled, never folded.

At home

A runner this size suits a hallway or landing, walked on rather than admired from a chair. The brick red warms a corridor short on daylight, and the navy border holds its own against dark floors. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for daily traffic, the low pile keeping its edge for years. Catch it in passing light and the cream medallion centres lift, then settle into the red.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 214 × 73 cm (1.56 m²) this is a runner. It belongs in a hallway, an entrance, on a landing or lengthways beside a bed. It is too narrow for the middle of a room.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 1.56 m² that is roughly 690,000 to 780,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
