About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

This is a Bidjar, also spelled Bijar, the Kurdish weaving from western Iran nicknamed the iron rug of Persia for a density and durability that collectors still test against modern production. At 212 x 130 cm (6'11" x 4'3"), it sits toward the smaller, more personal end of the Bidjar range. The type is known for pairing strong geometry with classic Persian floral drawing.

What you see

The field is a deep navy, filled edge to edge with a fine Mahi diamond lattice — rosettes and serrated leaf forms repeating without a medallion to gather them. The repeat holds an unusual evenness for a design carried in memory rather than drawn on paper. Rust red, dusty rose, ivory, sage and powder blue run through it in small measures. A wide rust-red border closes the field, framed by narrower navy-and-cream guard stripes, its contrast giving the rug a firm, drawn edge.

How it was made

Each knot here was tied by hand, cotton warp carrying a pile of wool blended with silk, at a density of 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre — high by Bidjar standards, already the tightest tradition in Persian weaving. That density lets a pattern this fine hold its shape without blurring, while the silk through the wool catches light along the rosettes, giving the slight sheen across the field. The same pressed, compact structure means a Bidjar is never folded, only rolled.

At home

At 212 x 130 cm, this suits a bedroom or a quiet corner of a living room, met up close rather than seen across a room. The navy holds its own against dark furniture and warms a pale floor, the rust border giving the eye somewhere to land. Underfoot it is dense and firm, pressed tight enough for daily use, and morning light moves across the silk in the lattice.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 212 × 130 cm (2.76 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 2.76 m² that is roughly 1.2 to 1.4 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
