About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a Bidjar, also written Bijar, 295 x 200 cm (9'8" x 6'7"), knotted in the Kurdish villages of western Iran and known among collectors as one of the ‘Iron Rugs of Persia’ for its density and weight. Bidjar weavers usually fill the whole field with unbroken pattern; here that density is drawn instead around a single, clear medallion at the centre.
What you see
The field is a warm brick red, filled edge to edge with a fine Mahi lattice in dusty rose, ochre, sage and slate blue, the kind of pattern that usually runs uninterrupted across a Bidjar. Here it is broken by a large diamond medallion outlined in navy, and within it a smaller diamond in ivory holds its own miniature floral pattern, one shape set inside another. A wide border in navy and rust, laced with cream floral vines, closes the composition.
How it was made
That nested medallion is only possible because of how tightly a Bidjar is built. Knot counts run between 201,000 and 250,000 per square metre, worked in handspun wool over a cotton warp and beaten down hard at the loom, the pressing that gives the type its name. At that density a weaver can draw a diamond within a diamond and keep every line sharp, where a looser knot would blur it soft. The pile is cropped to 15 millimetres, giving a crisp rather than plush surface.
At home
At 295 x 200 cm this suits a dining table or a living-room seating group. The brick red warms a pale floor and holds its own against dark furniture, the ivory medallion anchoring the eye. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built to be walked on rather than protected. Morning light finds the ivory diamond first, then settles across the pattern.

How do I care for this rug?
Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
