About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

This is a Bijar runner, 241 x 83 cm (7'11" x 2'9"), woven in the Kurdish regions of western Iran. Bijar rugs carry the nickname Iron Rugs of Persia, prized for a pile so densely knotted that a piece can be rolled but never folded. They are traditionally the most tightly woven of all Persian rugs, built to outlast the room they are laid in.

What you see

The field opens in a warm cream white, covered edge to edge in a fine diamond lattice known as Mahi. Down its length march three floral medallions, evenly spaced and drawn almost as mirror images of one another, in deep brick red, dark navy, and touches of sage green, dusty pink and steel blue. A wide brick-red border closes the design, layered with floral guard stripes, taking up close to a fifth of the width and holding the pale centre firmly in place.

How it was made

Bijar work is knotted from memory rather than from a drawn plan, yet here that memory has produced a rhythm precise enough to look pre-set out. The cotton warp is beaten down hard after every row, the mark of true Bijar construction, and at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre the pile holds its pattern with unusual sharpness. Silk runs through the wool of the medallions, catching a light sheen the surrounding wool does not have, so the flowers lift slightly from the lattice around them.

At home

A runner of this size suits a hallway or landing, somewhere it will be walked on rather than admired from a chair. The cream ground lifts a dim corridor, and the red border holds its own against dark floorboards. Underfoot the pile is dense and close at 15mm, sturdy enough for daily footsteps, while the silk in the medallions catches the passing light, so the three flowers never quite look the same twice.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 241 × 83 cm (2.00 m²) this is a runner. It belongs in a hallway, an entrance, on a landing or lengthways beside a bed. It is too narrow for the middle of a room.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 2.00 m² that is roughly 0.9 to 1.0 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
