About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
The rug in front of you is a Bidjar, also written Bijar, from the Kurdish weaving regions of western Iran, measuring 243 x 155 cm (7'11" x 5'1"). Persian rug dealers have called this type the Iron Rugs of Persia for generations, and the name is earned rather than decorative: no other rug in the Persian tradition is knotted this densely, and the resulting structure is so compact that a Bidjar is never folded, only rolled.
What you see
A deep brick red governs the field, and across it runs a fine, all-over lattice of small florals in the Mahi manner, so dense that the red never quite settles into a flat colour. At the centre sits a large lobed medallion, drawn in ivory and navy, its inner star built from an unusual rosette of rust, ochre and steel blue that stands apart from the red-and-navy scheme around it. Matching navy spandrels anchor the corners, and a wide navy border, filled with floral scrollwork, is held between narrower ivory and red guard stripes that keep the whole design sharply legible from across a room.
How it was made
That sharpness comes directly from the knotting: at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, this is among the tightest work the Persian tradition produces, and the wool pile is spun through with silk, which takes a finer, tighter knot than wool alone and lets the weaver draw a rosette this small without it blurring. The same density presses the 15 mm pile into the firm, almost velvety surface you feel underfoot, and it is what gives a Bidjar its long-standing reputation for holding its pattern and its shape for decades rather than softening with use.
At home
A rug this size and this dense sits well in a seating area or a bedroom, somewhere it will be seen up close rather than crossed in passing. The brick red holds its own against dark wood or leather furniture and brings real warmth to a pale floor, while the navy medallion keeps the whole field anchored rather than busy. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for a room that gets used, not one that is kept for show. Where the light catches it low, the rosette's ochre and steel blue lift briefly out of the red and navy, a small, changing detail that rewards a second and third look over the years.
