About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a Bidjar, a rug type from the Kurdish weaving regions of western Iran, long nicknamed the Iron Rugs of Persia for a density few other Persian weaves attempt. This piece measures 299 x 207 cm (9'10" x 6'9"), a classic medallion format built to carry both geometry and the floral drawing the tradition is known for.
What you see
A deep brick red fills the field, patterned throughout with the fine fish-scale lattice known as Mahi. At its centre a stepped ivory hexagon rises against that red, its core dark burgundy, flanked along its long axis by two small diamond pendants in the same colouring. Navy spandrels close the corners, and a wide floral vine border, navy-ground with pink, cream and rust palmettes, frames the whole, taking close to a fifth of the rug's width.
How it was made
Knot density here runs to 441,000-500,000 per square metre, among the tightest counts in the Persian tradition, and that closeness is what lets the ivory medallion keep such a sharp edge against the red ground. A little silk worked through the wool pile catches light along its outline, giving the surface a light sheen rather than an even shine. Kept to 15 mm, the pile stays low and firm rather than plush, and the weave is so compact that a Bidjar like this is rolled rather than folded, to keep its lines true.
At home
At close to three metres by two, this Bidjar suits a dining table or a sofa group, in a living or dining room built for daily use. The brick red holds its own against dark wood furniture and warms a pale floor without help from anything else in the room. Underfoot it is dense and firm, made to be walked on rather than kept for best, and it takes a busy household well. As light moves across the room, the silk in the medallion catches it a little differently each time, so the ivory hexagon never sits quite still.
