About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

This is a Bijar runner, also written Bidjar, from the Kurdish region of western Iran, 213 x 60 cm (7'0" x 2'0"). Bijar rugs are known as the Iron Rugs of Persia, prized for a density and weight unmatched elsewhere in the Persian tradition. Where a single Bijar usually gathers around one commanding medallion, this runner turns that medallion into a repeating rhythm along its length.

What you see

A warm brick red carries the field from end to end, calm rather than fiery. Down its length march six lozenge-shaped medallions, drawn almost identically, set on a dense red Mahi lattice that keeps the ground from ever looking empty. Navy defines each medallion's outline, ivory and cream fill the centres, and light blue and dusty rose appear in the border. That border runs wide, close to a fifth of the width, navy scrollwork against cream, holding the field firmly in place.

How it was made

This runner was hand-knotted at a density of 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, among the tightest a Persian loom produces, and that density is what lets six medallions repeat with such precision, with no drawn cartoon to guide the hand. Silk runs through the wool pile, spinning finer than wool and letting the weaver sharpen each outline. At 15 mm the pile sits low and firm, pressed so tightly onto its cotton warp that the rug can only be rolled, never folded.

At home

A runner this length suits a hallway or landing, somewhere walked rather than viewed from a chair. Its brick red warms a corridor with little daylight, while the navy border holds firm against a dark floor or skirting. Pressed this densely, the wool takes footsteps without flattening, and a Bijar this substantial is made for daily use rather than for show. Walk its length and the six medallions pass by in turn, giving the hall a quiet rhythm each time someone crosses it.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 213 × 60 cm (1.28 m²) this is a runner. It belongs in a hallway, an entrance, on a landing or lengthways beside a bed. It is too narrow for the middle of a room.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 1.28 m² that is roughly 560,000 to 640,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
