Where it comes from
This is a Bijar, the rug type from the Kurdish regions of western Iran long nicknamed the Iron Rugs of Persia for a density that lets it outlast almost any other Persian weave underfoot. This piece measures 243 x 203 cm (8'0" x 6'8"). Where the type is often built around a bold geometric medallion, this one carries a quieter, classic all-over pattern instead.
What you see
The first impression is a deep brick red, packed edge to edge with no medallion to interrupt it. Look again and the red resolves into two closely woven tones, a near-black lattice threaded through the rust, giving the field a quiet depth rather than one flat wash. Across it runs a fine, small-scale Mahi lattice, drawn with real precision and no wandering. A wide ivory border carries the design outward, filled with dark scrolling vines and palmettes, and is closed in by narrow red and near-black guard stripes.
How it was made
Bijar rugs are pressed and packed tighter than any other weave in the Persian tradition, so densely that a piece this size cannot be folded, only rolled. Here that density is 381,000 to 440,000 knots per square metre, tied by hand over a cotton warp in hand-spun wool, each row beaten hard into place before the next was started. That compression is what lets the lattice sit as fine and even as it does, and it is what keeps a Bijar's pattern sharp underfoot long after a lighter rug would have gone soft at the edges.
At home
At this size the rug is built for a dining table or a living room seating group, sitting under the furniture rather than floating loose in the middle of the floor. The brick red holds its own against dark wood or a dark sofa, and warms a pale floor without tipping the whole room red. Underfoot the pile is short, dense and firm, wool packed hard rather than left deep, made for a room that gets walked through daily. Watch it through an afternoon and the two reds in the field keep trading places as the light crosses them.
