About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a Bidjar, also written Bijar, knotted by Kurdish weavers in the west of Iran and measuring 239 x 175 cm (7'10" x 5'9"). The type has long been called the iron rugs of Persia, a name earned by the densest knotting in the entire Persian tradition and by a body so compact it can only be rolled, never folded.
What you see
A deep brick red covers the field, filled edge to edge with a fine, repeating diamond lattice of fish-leaf rosettes, drawn so evenly that the eye finds no thinning and no drift across it. At the centre sits a sharply drawn star medallion in navy and cream, its pendants reaching toward the corners, where four quarter-medallions repeat its shape and colour exactly. A wide cream border carries dark-red and navy floral vine scrollwork between two thin navy guard stripes, holding its own against the red.
How it was made
That evenness comes from the knot count. Hand-knotted, this piece carries between 441,000 and 500,000 knots per square metre, the densest range in the Persian tradition, packed onto a cotton warp so tightly that no motif can drift as the field grows. The pile is wool, lifted with silk through the medallion and border lines, since silk is finer than wool and holds a sharper edge. Clipped to fifteen millimetres, the surface sits tight and slightly flattened underfoot, substantial rather than plush.
At home
This is a rug for a seating area in a living room, or for the foot of a bed, seen whole rather than lost under furniture. The brick red warms a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for daily use rather than for show. As the light moves, the silk in the medallion catches first, then settles back into the red.
