About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a Bijar runner from the Kurdish weaving regions of western Iran, 301 x 87 cm (9'10" x 2'10"). Bijar rugs are known across the trade as the Iron Rugs of Persia, for a structure pressed so dense and firm that a piece this size cannot be folded, only rolled. It is a reputation built on density rather than decoration, and this runner is a fine, narrow example of exactly that.
What you see
The first impression is a rich brick red running the full length, uninterrupted by any medallion. Looking closer, that red resolves into an all-over Mahi lattice, small diamond forms interlocking edge to edge in a fine, even repeat, each one outlined in dark navy with touches of burgundy. A cream-ground border runs the length on either side, about a sixth of the width, carrying a dark floral vine and small palmettes with a hint of teal-green, and against the red field this pale border reads as a clean, continuous frame rather than a decoration of its own.
How it was made
That density is not incidental. Bijar weavers work to the tightest knot count in the Persian tradition, and here it reaches up to 500,000 knots per square metre, a figure that over a runner this length means months at the loom, diamond after diamond, without a break in the drawing. The pile itself is wool spun with silk, a thread fine enough to carry a sharper knot than wool alone allows, which is what gives the lattice its crisp, unblurred edges. Clipped close and pressed flat under that density, the surface has the firm, compact hand Bijar is built on.
At home
A runner this size belongs in a hallway or along a landing, exactly where a rug is asked to work hardest and is seen only in passing. The brick red holds its warmth on either pale or dark floorboards and needs no daylight to read rich, which suits a hallway that often gets little. Underfoot it is dense and firm rather than soft, a rug made to be walked on rather than kept for best, and that iron reputation earns its place here more than almost anywhere else in the house. Passing along it morning and evening, what stays with you is simply how steady that red remains underfoot.
