About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

This is a Bijar, also written Bidjar, from the Kurdish weaving regions of western Iran, 227 x 179 cm (7'5" x 5'10"). Bijars have long been called the Iron Rugs of Persia, prized above all for a density and firmness that no other Persian weaving matches. Most read as an unbroken field of pattern; this one is built instead around a single bright centre.

What you see

The field is a deep wine red, almost blackish, dense with the fine diamond lattice of a classic Mahi design. Out of that darkness rises a bright ivory star medallion, its edges crisp against the red, and the same ivory ground reappears in all four corners, giving the layout a deliberate, mirrored symmetry. Sage green scrollwork, dusty pink and steel blue florals sit within it, outlined in black. A wide border of rosettes and scrolling vine is framed by narrow cream and midnight guard stripes.

How it was made

That clarity comes from the weave. The pile is wool worked with silk over a cotton warp, knotted by hand to a density of 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, among the tightest found in Persian weaving. Silk takes a finer knot than wool alone, keeping the medallion's outline sharp against the dark field. At this density a rug of this size holds several million knots, and the result is a pile so compact that a Bijar is never folded, only rolled.

At home

A rug this size suits a bedroom or a smaller seating area, where its weight of colour is taken in at once. The dark red holds its ground against both dark wood and pale floors, and the ivory medallion lifts the centre of the room. Underfoot it is dense and firm, made for daily use, and the ivory star is what keeps catching the light.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 227 × 179 cm (4.06 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 4.06 m² that is roughly 1.8 to 2.0 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
