Where it comes from
This is a Bijar, the type of Persian rug knotted by Kurdish weavers in western Iran and known there, not for looks, as the iron rug of the country. At 202 x 140 cm (6'7" x 4'7"), it carries the density the name refers to, knotted from memory on a village loom rather than from a drawn plan, and it shows in a field that leaves almost no ground bare.
What you see
A deep navy field is so thickly set with coral and salmon-red flowers on their scrolling vines that the blue barely shows between them. There is no medallion to gather the eye; the pattern runs edge to edge in a lattice of blossoms, with cream and dusty rose filling the gaps, so that from across a room it reads more like a woven textile print than a rug with a centre and a field. The border answers this in kind rather than framing it quietly: several steel-blue guard stripes and one broad ivory band, itself carrying large coral floral clusters, run nearly a fifth of the rug's width, wide and confident enough to hold its own against the field it surrounds.
How it was made
That density is not only visual. At 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, this is among the tightest knotting in the Persian tradition, and the hand-spun wool pile is packed in at 15mm over a cotton warp, giving a firmness rugs at lower density never achieve. A Bijar this dense cannot be folded, only rolled, and getting there is not quick work; a piece this size represents months at the loom, knot by knot, before it ever reaches a floor.
At home
In a living room, laid under a seating group rather than tucked to one side, that navy field holds its own against dark wood or leather furniture, while the coral and dusty rose keep it from ever reading as flat or cold. Underfoot it is dense and firm rather than soft, the kind of construction that takes daily footfall without complaint, so it suits a room that gets used rather than one kept for best. Late in the day, low light catches the coral clusters in the border first, then works its way into the field, and the flowers seem to come forward one by one rather than all at once.
