About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a Bidjar, also written Bijar, a Kurdish weaving from western Iran, long nicknamed the iron rug of Persia for its density and legendary durability. It measures 222 x 193 cm (7'3" x 6'4"). Bidjar rugs are knotted so tightly that they hold their shape and sharpness underfoot for decades, a construction so compact it can only be rolled, not folded.
What you see
The first impression is of an ivory field, cool and even, carrying a fine diamond lattice in the Mahi, or Herati, pattern. At its centre sits a medallion drawn in deep red and navy, sharp-edged and exact, and the same red-and-navy drawing reappears in the four corner spandrels, mirrored almost stroke for stroke, crisper and higher in contrast than corner palmettes on this pattern usually are. Around it runs a wide border in navy-black, filled with red floral scrollwork and edged by narrow guard stripes and a plain camel band, framing the field like a dark, ornamented sill.
How it was made
Bidjar weavers hand-knot each row and beat the weft hard into place with a metal comb, producing a pile so dense that the finished rug weighs noticeably more than an ordinary piece of the same size. Here the pile is wool worked with silk over a cotton foundation; silk spins finer than wool, letting the knot sit smaller and tighter. At up to 500,000 knots to the square metre, the drawing stays exact, holding the medallion and its mirrored corners in sharp line and giving the surface its light, even sheen.
At home
A rug this size settles naturally into a seating area in a living room, in front of a sofa or beneath a low table. Its ivory ground lifts a room short on daylight, and the navy border holds its own against dark furniture. Underfoot it feels dense and firm, built for daily use, and as light moves across it the red medallion seems to glow against the pale field.
