About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a Bijar, also written Bidjar, from the Kurdish weaving regions of western Iran, 214 x 142 cm (7'0" x 4'8"). The type is known across the trade as one of the Iron Rugs of Persia, prized for a structure so dense and firmly pressed that a Bijar cannot be folded, only rolled, and for holding its shape and edge through decades of daily use.
What you see
The field is a deep brick red, filled edge to edge with a fine, tightly repeated Mahi lattice - the diamond trellis known in the West as Herati - drawn in navy and black lines with small cream and ivory rosettes set at each crossing. There is no medallion here; the pattern simply runs, close and even, across the whole rug. A wide navy border carries the same restraint, its cream and rust palmette vine held between narrower cream and slate-grey guard stripes.
How it was made
That evenness owes everything to the knot. Bijar rugs are worked at among the highest densities in the Persian tradition, and this piece falls between 201,000 and 250,000 knots per square metre, in handspun wool over a cotton warp. At that density a small diamond repeat can be drawn cleanly across a wide field without drifting, which is why the lattice holds its rhythm from one corner to the other. The wool is then pressed hard into the foundation, giving a firm, compact 15 mm pile rather than a soft one.
At home
A rug this size suits a bedroom or a smaller sitting area, laid where it can be seen whole rather than tucked half under furniture. The brick red holds its own against dark wood and warms a pale floor, while the navy border keeps the eye inside the rug rather than letting it spread. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for a room in daily use, and the red only shifts in tone as the light moves across it through the day.
