About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
The Bijar is often called the Iron Rug of Persia, and few types make the claim so literally. Woven in the Kurdish districts of western Iran, this one measures 286 x 255 cm (9'5" x 8'4") and belongs to a tradition prized above all for how densely it is built and how long it holds up under daily use. Bijar weavers typically set strong geometry against classic Persian floral drawing, and this piece is a fine, even example of that pairing rather than a rug built around one dramatic feature.
What you see
The field is a dark navy with a faint violet cast to it, closer to aubergine than to black or plain blue, and it carries real depth rather than sitting flat. Across it runs a small, tightly repeated lattice of rosettes in the Mahi pattern, covering the whole field edge to edge with no medallion to interrupt it. Around this, a wide brick-red border unfolds in floral vine scrollwork, held in by narrow ivory and red guard stripes that draw a sharp line between the dark centre and the warmer frame. The surface is tight and low, with a matte, hand-spun look and no sheen to distract from the drawing.
How it was made
That combination of colour depth and fine, even pattern comes directly from how the rug was built. Bijar weaving is knotted at a density few other Persian types attempt, here between 441,000 and 500,000 knots per square metre, which is what allows a lattice this small and this regular to stay sharp rather than blur. The pile itself is wool blended with silk over a cotton foundation, and the silk content is what gives the navy its unusual depth of colour and its quiet, non-reflective glow rather than a flat, single-tone black. At 15 millimetres, the pile sits low and dense underfoot, which is also why a Bijar can only ever be rolled, never folded — the weave is simply too compact to crease.
At home
A rug this size sits comfortably under a dining table or in front of a sofa group, and this one earns either room. In a living room with plenty of daylight, the deep navy holds its own against pale floors and gives dark furniture something to sit against rather than disappear into; the red border keeps the whole piece from reading as too sombre. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for a room that gets used rather than one that is kept for show. As the light moves across it during the day, the violet undertone in the navy shifts subtly with it, and the red border catches the warmth long after the rest of the room has gone quiet.
