About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
A Bidjar, also written Bijar, from the Kurdish weaving regions of western Iran, measuring 239 x 209 cm (7'10" x 6'10"). Known as the Iron Rugs of Persia, the type carries the densest knotting in the Persian tradition and a structure so compact it can only be rolled, never folded. This piece puts that density to unusually exact use, hand-knotted from memory yet mirrored like a drawn plan.
What you see
The field is a deep brick red, overlaid with a dense navy lattice in the Mahi, or fish, pattern repeating edge to edge. Out of this ground rises a sharply drawn central medallion in cream, red, sage green and slate blue, and the same palette reappears almost exactly in the four corner spandrels, giving the whole layout a deliberate, mirrored symmetry. A wide cream border frames it, carrying dark navy floral scrollwork and a red guard stripe.
How it was made
That mirroring comes directly from the knotting: at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, this sits among the densest weaving in the whole Persian tradition, dense enough to let a weaver working from memory repeat a motif exactly across four corners. The pile is wool blended with silk, the silk fine enough to sharpen every outline in the lattice and medallion, set on a cotton foundation pressed so tightly the finished rug can only be rolled.
At home
A rug this size settles naturally into a living room, anchoring a sofa group or sitting under a coffee table where the medallion can be read whole. The brick red holds its own against dark wood and warms a pale floor, while the cream border keeps the room light. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for daily use, and as daylight moves across it the wool-silk pile catches a soft sheen along the lattice.
