About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

A Bijar, also written Bidjar, from the Kurdish region of western Iran, 304 x 204 cm (9'11" x 6'8"). This is the weaving Persia calls the Iron Rug, prized above all for a density that holds its pattern and its shape for decades. Bijar work is hand-knotted so tightly that a rug this size can only be rolled, never folded.

What you see

The field is a warm brick red, carried edge to edge in a tight diamond lattice, the Herati, or Mahi, pattern repeated without a break and without a medallion at its centre. What stands out is how evenly it is drawn: no shift in tone, no give in the geometry, each diamond holding its size and angle across the full length of the rug. A broad navy border closes the field, filled with cream palmettes and vines, touched with steel blue, brown and pale pink, darker than everything it frames.

How it was made

Wool with silk gives that precision its edge. Silk spins far finer than wool, so a small amount worked into the pile lets the knot sit tighter and the outline sharpen, which is where the lattice gets its crispness and its faint sheen. At 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, this sits close to the densest knotting in the Persian tradition, and reaching it across the full two metres by three took months at the loom, row by row, each one held level against the last.

At home

At 304 x 204 cm this suits a dining room or a living room, sized for a table and its chairs, or for a sofa group. Brick red warms a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood, while the navy border keeps it anchored. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for daily use, and the silk in the pile catches a soft line of light wherever it falls across the lattice.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 304 × 204 cm (6.20 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 6.20 m² that is roughly 2.7 to 3.1 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
