About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

A Bidjar runner — also written Bijar — from the Kurdish weaving regions of western Iran, 295 x 102 cm (9'8" x 3'4"). Bidjar rugs are known across Persia as the Iron Rugs, prized for a density of knotting that outlasts almost anything else woven by hand. This one carries that reputation into an unusual form: three medallions set down its length in a deliberate, repeating sequence.

What you see

The field reads first as deep brick red, laced through with dark navy in a fine, repeating Mahi fish pattern. Down its length run three star-shaped medallions, evenly spaced and identically drawn, each outlined in navy and filled with salmon-pink and dusty rose petals, with a touch of sage green among them — a Seh Torandj sequence, giving the runner a rhythm most single-medallion runners lack. A broad ivory border, filled with fine floral vinework, frames the field and carries the eye the length of the rug.

How it was made

That rhythm holds together because Bijar weavers hand-knot to the densest tradition in Persian carpet-making, here between 441,000 and 500,000 knots per square metre. The pile is wool worked through with silk, which spins far finer than wool and lets more knots pack into each row without the pattern losing its edge — why the medallions and vinework stay crisp rather than soft. At 15 mm the pile sits low and pressed tight against a cotton warp, the compact build a Bijar is known for: rolled, never folded.

At home

A runner this length suits a hallway or landing, where the eye travels its full distance. The ivory border lifts a hallway with little daylight, while brick red and navy hold their own against dark wood or stone flooring. Dense and pressed close rather than deep, the pile takes daily traffic without complaint. Walk its length and the three medallions appear one after another, each catching the light a little differently.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 295 × 102 cm (3.01 m²) this is a runner. It belongs in a hallway, an entrance, on a landing or lengthways beside a bed. It is too narrow for the middle of a room.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 3.01 m² that is roughly 1.3 to 1.5 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
