About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

This is a Bidjar, also written Bijar, knotted by Kurdish weavers in western Iran, measuring 241 x 169 cm (7'11" x 5'7"). Bidjars are known as the iron rugs of Persia, prized for a knot so dense it can only be rolled, never folded, and for a durability collectors have trusted for generations.

What you see

The first impression is warmth: a muted brick-red field glowing against dark navy corners. At the centre sits a large stepped medallion of nested hexagons in rose, navy and cream, each ring filled with a fine Mahi lattice, reading almost like a target. Navy spandrels hold the corners, sharpened by ivory triangles. A wide black border, more saturated than the field, carries a vine of rose-pink palmettes and teal-green leaves between narrow ivory and rose guard stripes.

How it was made

That precision comes from the knot itself. Bidjar weavers pack in 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, the densest construction in the Persian tradition, working wool together with silk - a finer fibre that lets the knot close tighter. It is why the medallion's bands hold such a crisp edge, and why the tightly clipped 15mm pile keeps the lattice legible. That same density leaves the rug so compact it can only be rolled, never folded - built for years of wear rather than delicacy.

At home

At 241 x 169 cm this rug suits a seating area or a bedroom, large enough to anchor a sofa group or sit beneath a bed. The terracotta field warms a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood or navy upholstery, the black border giving real gravity. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for daily use rather than being kept for best. As daylight crosses the room, the nested bands of the medallion catch it differently, so it never settles into one still image.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 241 × 169 cm (4.07 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 4.07 m² that is roughly 1.8 to 2.0 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
