About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

A Bidjar from the Kurdish regions of western Iran, 290 x 198 cm (9'6" x 6'6"), the size of a rug for a proper dining table or a full seating group. Bidjars are known in the trade as the iron rugs of Persia, prized above all other Persian weavings for a density and a solidity that let them outlast almost anything else on the floor.

What you see

The field is an unusually deep navy, close to black, and it is this that sets the piece apart, since the all-over Mahi design usually sits on red or ivory rather than a ground this dark. Across it runs a fine lattice of small rosettes in brick red and cream, with touches of dusty rose, sage and slate blue scattered through the repeat, and no medallion breaks the pattern from edge to edge. A wide brick-red border carries a scrolling floral vine, held in by a narrow cream guard stripe that keeps the dark field and the warm border distinct from one another.

How it was made

Bidjars are knotted from memory in Kurdish villages rather than drawn out on a workshop cartoon, yet this one is finely enough drawn to look almost formal, and the reason is in the pile. Wool carries a thread of silk here, and silk spins far finer than wool, so the knotting can run tighter without losing definition — this piece sits at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, the densest range in the whole Persian tradition, which is what lets rosettes this small stay crisp. That same compaction is why a Bidjar is never folded, only rolled, and why the rug carries real weight in the hand for its size.

At home

In a room it wants a dark table or dark furniture nearby, against which the navy will hold its own rather than recede, while the red and cream lift it above simply being a dark rug. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for a room that gets used rather than kept for best, and the wool takes the traffic without complaint. Wait for evening light to cross it and the silk in the pile gives the rosettes a quiet gleam that the wool alone would not.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 290 × 198 cm (5.74 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 5.74 m² that is roughly 2.5 to 2.9 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
