About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

This is a Bijar, also written Bidjar, the Kurdish weaving of western Iran that has earned the name "the Iron Rugs of Persia" for a density of knotting no other Persian tradition matches. At 351 x 245 cm (11'6" x 8'0"), it is sized for a proper room. Bijar is prized above all for how long it lasts underfoot.

What you see

The first impression is of a striped flowerbed rather than a single repeating field: deep brick red and ivory run in alternating horizontal bands across the rug, each one dense with small floral sprays in salmon pink and dusty teal. There is no medallion to gather the eye — the pattern simply continues, row upon row, band after band. Around it runs a wide border on a navy ground, cream floral vines drawn through it, held between narrow ivory guard stripes and a red outer edge that answers the field within.

How it was made

Holding each stripe exact took an extraordinary hand-knotted density: 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, among the highest of any Persian weave. At that fine a grid, the weaver could keep each band and every floral sprig distinct, rather than letting the colours run together as a coarser knot would allow. A little silk runs through the wool pile, giving the surface a faint sheen and sharpening each outline further. The weave is so compact that a Bijar of this kind cannot be folded, only rolled.

At home

This is a dining room or living room rug, sized for a table and chairs or a full seating group. The brick red and cream bands warm a pale floor and hold their own against dark wood or leather. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for daily use rather than for show. As light moves across it through the day, the silk catches band by band, and the striped field seems to shift gently from one row to the next.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 351 × 245 cm (8.60 m²) this is a very large rug. It carries a whole seating group with every furniture leg on it, or a dining table with the chairs pushed back. In a small room it becomes the floor rather than a rug.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 8.60 m² that is roughly 3.8 to 4.3 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
