About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

A Bidjar, also written Bijar, in a small format: 75 x 58 cm (2'6" x 1'11"). The type comes from the Kurdish regions of western Iran, and is known among collectors as one of the most densely knotted weavings in the Persian tradition — dense enough that a Bidjar is never folded, only rolled. This piece carries that same construction into a size meant for a single spot rather than a room.

What you see

The ground is a bright ivory, almost fully covered by bouquets of deep red roses that radiate outward from a navy medallion at the centre. Olive leaves and touches of mustard and steel blue move through the roses, and in the corners a scalloped, vase-shaped palmette echoes the medallion's outline on all four sides. A navy border, itself filled with red rose clusters, closes the composition and takes up roughly a fifth of the rug's width. Against the pale field, that border reads as a firm, dark frame rather than a heavy one.

How it was made

The pile is handspun wool on a cotton warp, hand-knotted at a density of 251,000 to 320,000 knots per square metre — the kind of tightness that lets a small piece like this hold the same crisp rose outlines and clean medallion edges you would expect on a rug many times its size. At 15 mm, the pile sits low and even, with a matte, soft-looking surface and no shine, so the detail stays sharp rather than softening into the wool. That same density is what gives the piece its characteristic weight in the hand, out of proportion to its size.

At home

A rug this size is not for the middle of a room. It belongs by a front door, on a small landing, or under a lamp table in a study or hallway — somewhere it is seen daily rather than walked across. In a hallway with little daylight, the ivory ground and red roses lift the space rather than disappearing into it. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built to the same standard as its larger relatives, so it takes the daily traffic of a doorway without concern. Morning light across the field will pick out the rose bouquets one at a time before settling on the medallion.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 75 × 58 cm (0.43 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 251,000 to 320,000 knots per square metre; across 0.43 m² that is roughly 110,000 to 140,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
