About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a Bidjar, from the Kurdish weaving regions of western Iran, measuring 241 x 173 cm (7'11" x 5'8"). Bidjars are known across the trade as the Iron Rugs of Persia, prized for a density of knotting that outlasts almost anything else woven by hand, and for a weight and firmness that is unmistakable the moment you lift a corner.
What you see
The first impression is a sharply defined diamond in cream, floating inside a larger brick-red lozenge, held at the corners by dark navy spandrels. Around the medallion, tiny repeating florets in rust, olive, dusty pink and pale blue fill the field in the dense small-scale style known as Mahi. A broad ivory border, carrying a red-and-navy palmette vine and running to roughly a fifth of the rug's width, closes the design with a calm, even frame. What holds the eye is the medallion itself: a genuinely clean cream, not softened or tinted into the red around it, so the contrast reads sharp rather than blended.
How it was made
That sharpness is a direct result of how the rug was built. At 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre, this is among the densest knotting in the Persian tradition, and it is what lets a curve or a diamond edge stay crisp instead of dissolving into its neighbour. The pile is handspun wool, clipped to a short 15 mm over a cotton foundation, giving a compact, tightly packed surface rather than a deep, soft one. Wool this densely packed is also why a Bidjar, also written Bijar, is traditionally rolled rather than folded — the structure is too firm to crease.
At home
At 241 x 173 cm this rug sits comfortably under a seating group in a living room or beneath a smaller dining table, and its weight of colour is made for exactly that kind of use. The brick red holds its own against dark wood or leather, while the cream medallion lifts a paler floor without washing out. Underfoot it is dense, firm, and genuinely built for daily traffic.
