About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

A Bidjar, or Bijar, rug, hand-knotted in the Kurdish region of western Iran, measuring 365 x 258 cm (12'0" x 8'6"). Weavers there knot so densely that the type has earned the name "the iron rugs of Persia", prized for holding its shape and edge for decades. This piece pairs that famous solidity with a classic medallion drawn over an all-over Herati field.

What you see

The field is a deep brick red, filled edge to edge with a fine diamond lattice in tone-on-tone red. Over this sits a large lozenge medallion in navy and ivory-cream, its outline sharp against the red rather than fading into it. The four corner spandrels echo that same navy-and-cream palette, locking the layout into a deliberate, mirrored symmetry. A wide navy border, heavier and darker than the field, carries red and cream floral scrollwork, closed by a slim red guard stripe.

How it was made

This density is not incidental. Bijar is the tightest knotted of all Persian rug types, and this piece falls between 501,000 and 640,000 knots per square metre, so compact it cannot be folded, only rolled. That tightness lets the weaver draw a hard edge between red and navy rather than blurring the two at the medallion. The pile is wool blended with silk over a cotton foundation, kept low at 15 millimetres, giving the field a faint sheen without softening its sharp drawing.

At home

Sized for a dining room or living room, this rug sits under a table and chairs or anchors a seating area. The brick red warms a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood. Underfoot it is dense and firm, made for daily use rather than a room kept for best. In changing light the silk lifts a faint sheen, and the medallion stays sharp.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 365 × 258 cm (9.42 m²) this is a very large rug. It carries a whole seating group with every furniture leg on it, or a dining table with the chairs pushed back. In a small room it becomes the floor rather than a rug.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 501,000 to 640,000 knots per square metre; across 9.42 m² that is roughly 4.7 to 6.0 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
