About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
A Bidjar, from the Kurdish weaving country of western Persia, 253 x 163 cm (8'4" x 5'4"). Bidjar rugs have long been called the iron rugs of Persia, for a knot so dense and so firmly beaten that the finished piece can only be rolled, never folded, and holds its shape and sharpness for decades. This one carries that reputation with an added precision not every Bidjar shows.
What you see
The field is a deep brick red, patterned all over with a fine diamond lattice in the Mahi, or Herati, style. At its centre sits a lozenge medallion drawn in navy and ivory, sharp against the red, linked by pendants to matching quarter-medallions in each corner. Those four corners echo the medallion's colour and drawing so closely that the whole layout reads as one deliberate composition rather than a field with an ornament added. A wide navy-black border, filled with rust, cream and dusty-blue palmettes, closes the design with real weight.
How it was made
That symmetry comes out of an unusually fine, dense knot: this piece carries between 441,000 and 500,000 knots per square metre, among the higher counts in the Persian tradition, each one tied by hand over a cotton warp. The pile is wool blended with silk, which spins thinner than wool alone and lets the weaver draw a sharper line, which is why the medallion's edges stay so crisp and the surface carries a light sheen. Kept to 15 millimetres, the pile sits low and firm, built to hold this pattern's precision rather than let it soften with wear.
At home
A rug this size belongs in a living room, in front of a sofa or under a low table where its density can be seen rather than walked past. The brick red holds its own against dark wood or leather, and warms a pale floor without needing much else around it. Underfoot it is dense and firm, a rug for a room in daily use rather than one kept for best. As the light moves across it through the day, the dusty blue and mustard threads in the border catch and soften, while the navy medallion at the centre stays exactly as sharp as the day it was tied.
