About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a Bijar runner, hand-knotted in the Kurdish region of western Iran, 314 x 99 cm (10'4" x 3'3"). The type is known across the trade as the Iron Rugs of Persia, a name earned by a weave pressed so dense that a finished piece can only be rolled, never folded, and one that holds its shape for decades. Also written Bidjar.
What you see
A deep brick red dominates the field, laid out as a fine diamond lattice in the Mahi pattern. Along its length sit three octagonal medallions on navy-black grounds, identical in size and colour, each centred on an ivory floral rosette touched with salmon pink, forming an even, marching column rather than one dominant centre. A dark navy floral border, edged on each side by an ivory guard stripe, holds the design in a frame narrow relative to the rug's length.
How it was made
Bijar rugs are knotted onto a cotton warp and pounded hard against the foundation, which gives the weave its legendary weight. This piece is wool with an admixture of silk, at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre and a pile 15 millimetres deep. Silk spins finer than wool, letting the knotter draw the medallion outlines and rosettes with real sharpness and giving them their faint sheen. Matching three medallions this closely across more than three metres took months at the loom.
At home
This is a hallway or landing runner, and its brick red warms a passage with little daylight. Underfoot it is dense and firm rather than soft, a floor built to be walked on daily. As light moves along it, the sheen catches each medallion in turn, drawing the eye the length of the hall.
