About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

A Bijar runner, hand-knotted in the Kurdish regions of western Iran, measuring 287 x 75 cm (9'5" x 2'6"). The type is known across the Persian tradition as the Iron Rug, a name earned by its unusually dense, tightly pressed structure, so compact that a Bijar is never folded, only rolled. This piece carries that reputation in an especially quiet, disciplined drawing, with none of the boldness the type is often shown off with.

What you see

The field is a deep navy, close enough to black that it reads first as shadow rather than colour. Across it runs a dense, even Mahi lattice, repeated without a medallion, so the eye settles into rhythm rather than searching for a centre. A fine cream double line marks where the field ends, and then the border opens out in brick red, carrying a small, cream floral vine that is noticeably lighter and warmer than everything inside it. The contrast between the dark field and the red border is where the piece does its work.

How it was made

Knotted from memory rather than from a drawn plan, it was worked by hand at a density of 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, among the tightest found anywhere in Persian weaving, and months of steady work sit behind that number. The pile is wool with silk, and because silk spins finer than wool it lets the knot pull tighter still, which is what gives the lattice its crisp, unblurred edges and the surface its light sheen. A cotton warp underneath holds all of this firm, which is exactly why a Bijar keeps its shape for decades rather than softening at the edges.

At home

At 75 cm wide, this is a hallway or landing piece, or a runner beside a bed, and the dark field is an advantage in a passage with little daylight, since it does not wash out the way pale rugs can. The red border keeps it from disappearing into a dark corridor, catching the eye even where the light is thin. Underfoot it is dense, firm and substantial, built for a floor that gets walked on daily rather than admired from a doorway, and the slight sheen in the silk shifts gently along the border as you pass it.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 287 × 75 cm (2.15 m²) this is a runner. It belongs in a hallway, an entrance, on a landing or lengthways beside a bed. It is too narrow for the middle of a room.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 2.15 m² that is roughly 0.9 to 1.1 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
