About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

This is a Bidjar, also written Bijar, a runner from the Kurdish weaving regions of western Iran, measuring 246 x 55 cm (8'1" x 1'10"). Bidjar rugs are known as the iron rugs of Persia, prized for a density of knotting that holds its shape and edge for decades. Most carry this Mahi pattern on a deep red or navy ground; this one is knotted on ivory.

What you see

The field reads pale and even, a soft ivory carrying a dense all-over lattice of small rosettes and serrated leaf forms, the classic Mahi repeat, with no medallion to interrupt it. The pattern runs edge to edge in a calm, continuous rhythm, small touches of burgundy, dusty rose and grey caught within the rosettes. A wide navy border, carrying the same rosette design at a larger scale, closes the field firmly on both sides, finished with a slim red guard stripe that keeps the transition crisp rather than heavy.

How it was made

The wool pile is spun with silk, which takes a finer twist than wool and lets the small rosettes stay sharp on a pale ground that would otherwise blur. At 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, the density is among the highest in Persian weaving, packed so tightly onto a cotton warp that the rug cannot be folded, only rolled. That same density is what gives Bidjar its name as an iron rug, built to hold its edge and colour for decades of use.

At home

A runner of this length belongs in a hallway or along a landing, somewhere it is seen underfoot rather than from a chair. The ivory ground lifts a corridor with little daylight, holding its colour clearly against dark floorboards or a stone floor. Underfoot it is dense and firm rather than soft, a weave built to be walked on daily. Morning light catches the silk in the rosettes as it crosses, so the pattern flickers faintly along its length.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 246 × 55 cm (1.35 m²) this is a runner. It belongs in a hallway, an entrance, on a landing or lengthways beside a bed. It is too narrow for the middle of a room.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 1.35 m² that is roughly 600,000 to 680,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
