About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

A Bidjar, also written Bijar, 247 x 173 cm (8'1" x 5'8"), knotted by Kurdish weavers in western Iran. The type has earned itself a plain nickname among dealers and collectors: the iron rugs of Persia, for a density of knotting that no other Persian weaving group attempts, and a structure so compact that a Bidjar is never folded, only rolled.

What you see

A warm brick red dominates the field. Rising from it, a stepped hexagonal medallion is built in three or four concentric layers of Mahi lattice, colour alternating red to ivory and back to red toward the centre, so it reads as receding rings rather than one flat shape. Small herati-style rosettes in dusty rose and teal-green fill the ground around it. A broad ivory border, close to a fifth of the rug's width, carries a dense red-and-navy floral vine between narrow dark guard stripes.

How it was made

The layered look of the medallion is matched by real density in the weave: 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre, tighter than almost anywhere else in the Persian tradition, and the reason a Bidjar earns its name as an iron rug. The pile is hand-spun wool, sheared to fifteen millimetres over a cotton warp, thick enough to carry a slight sheen on the ivory motifs and heavy enough that the rug settles into a floor rather than sitting on top of it.

At home

This suits a seating area in a living room, or a quiet corner of a bedroom. The brick red holds its own against dark wood and warms a pale floor. Underfoot it is dense and firm, made for a room that sees real use. As daylight crosses it, the sheen on the ivory rings catches first, the layers shifting before settling back into red.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 247 × 173 cm (4.27 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 4.27 m² that is roughly 1.4 to 1.6 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
