About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
A Bidjar, also written Bijar, from the Kurdish region of western Iran, 252 x 198 cm (8'3" x 6'6"). The type is known across Persia as the Iron Rug, prized for a structure packed so densely that a finished piece can only be rolled, never folded, and for holding its shape and edge through decades of use.
What you see
The field opens in a deep brick red, worked throughout in a fine, small-scale Mahi lattice. Rising from it is a large stepped hexagonal medallion, built not as one flat shape but as nested rings, each ring alternating red and dark navy ground, each filled with the same fish-pattern lattice as the field around it. The effect is a medallion with layers rather than a silhouette. A wide floral vine border in matching red, edged with navy and cream guard stripes, closes the design without breaking from it.
How it was made
This depth comes from the knotting itself. Hand-knotted at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre — among the densest counts in the Persian tradition — the weaver had fine enough resolution to draw both the lattice and the ring boundaries of the medallion cleanly, rather than letting them blur into a single block of colour. The pile is wool strengthened with silk, which takes a finer knot than wool alone, set over a cotton warp at a compact 15 mm. Handled, the rug feels heavy and pressed, close to solid, exactly what the Bidjar name promises.
At home
A rug this size suits a dining room or a living room, laid under a table and chairs or in front of a sofa group rather than tucked beside a single chair. The brick red holds its own against dark wood or leather and warms a pale floor without needing help from anything else in the room. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for a room that gets used rather than kept for best. Walk around it through the day and the alternating red and navy rings of the medallion catch the light differently from each angle, so it never quite settles into one reading.
