About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

This is a Bidjar, also written Bijar, a rug type knotted in the Kurdish west of Iran and known across the trade as one of the Iron Rugs of Persia — prized for a density and weight that let it outlast almost any other weave underfoot. This particular piece measures 307 x 196 cm (10'1" x 6'5").

What you see

A deep, restrained brick red fills the field, broken by a medallion that glows ivory at its centre. The medallion is built in layers: a small ivory diamond set inside a larger red one, both nested within the main hexagonal-diamond medallion, giving an almost concentric effect rather than one simple shape. Around it runs a dense, small-scale Mahi repeat in rust, camel and touches of teal. A wide ivory border of dark-outlined floral scrollwork encloses the whole, held by slim navy guard stripes.

How it was made

This density comes from a tight, hand-spun wool pile, hand-knotted at 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre on a cotton warp, enough to hold the sharp lines of that nested medallion without softening at the edges. Hand-spun wool has an uneven, lustrous surface, which is why the field carries a quiet gleam rather than shine. At 15 millimetres the pile stays low and firm, packed rather than plush, tightly enough that the rug can only be rolled, not folded.

At home

A rug this size suits a dining table or a seating group in a living room, its weight meant to be felt. The brick red holds its own against dark wood and warms a pale floor, the ivory medallion keeping the field light rather than heavy. Underfoot the pile is dense and firm, built for daily use rather than careful preservation. As daylight crosses it, the ivory core catches first, and the medallion seems to step forward.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 307 × 196 cm (6.02 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 6.02 m² that is roughly 1.2 to 1.5 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
